ROMANE BOHRINGER

ACTRESS & DIRECTOR

© Christophe Brachet

Actress and director Romane Bohringer is invited to the 27th edition of the Festival international Music & Cinema Marseille as a guest of honour to reflect on her work as a director on Dites-lui que je l’aime and L’Amour flou.

“Cinema allowed me to find the strength to retrace the thread of my memory and confront all the shadowed corners I had left behind.” This sentence perfectly captures the turn Romane Bohringer’s work has taken in recent years: a gradual shift from acting toward a more personal form of filmmaking.

Actress and director, she has been building a singular artistic path since the early 1990s. Revealed at a very young age, she trained largely on the stage before receiving the 1992 César Award for Most Promising Actress for Savage Nights by Cyril Collard. From that moment on, she resisted any form of typecasting, moving fluidly between contrasting roles. She appears just as convincingly in Total Eclipse alongside Leonardo DiCaprio as in Maïwenn’s All About Actresses, and on stage where she performs works by Shakespeare and Ionesco as well as texts by Annie Ernaux.

In 2018, Romane Bohringer took a decisive step behind the camera with L’Amour flou, co-directed with Philippe Rebbot. Inspired by their own separation, the film adopts a light yet direct tone to explore the reinvention of a couple and a family after a breakup. A few years later, she returned to directing to continue this autobiographical exploration with Dites-lui que je l’aime, recently presented in the Special Screenings section at Cannes. Adapting a book by Clémentine Autain, Bohringer brings together two life stories marked by maternal absence—those of the author and herself—crafting a sensitive investigative film that moves between documentary and fiction.

Extending this reflective approach, Romane Bohringer will join the audience after the screening to discuss her journey, her inspirations, and the deeply personal bond she maintains with cinema.
