THE DUETS

Born for the 20th anniversary of the Festival, The Duets program shines a light on these loyal pairs of directors and composers who, through their repeated collaborations, captivate our eyes and move our ears as spectators.

For this new edition, the program features two duos : Cyril Aris and Anthony Sahyoun will present Un monde fragile et merveilleux, and Olivier Masset-Depasse et Frédéric Vercheval will present Duelles.

Cyril Aris & Anthony Sahyoun

Lebanese composer Anthony Sahyoun reunites with Cyril Aris after Danser sur un volcan – winner of the Best Film Award at the MCM in 2024 – for his first fiction feature, Un monde fragile et merveilleux.

In Beirut, Nino and Yasmina fall in love at school and dream of a wonderful future. Twenty years later, chance brings them back together: love is rekindled, fierce and irresistible. But can a future be built in a fractured country?

Cyril Aris delivers a new gem, a hopeful film in which human bonds become both refuge and strength. Ever-present yet subtle, Anthony Sahyoun’s music guides the audience between reality and fiction, hope and despair, reflecting the contradictions and transformation of a country. A beautiful and compelling film.

Olivier Masset-Depasse · Director

Frédéric Vercheval · Composer

Olivier Masset-Depasse & Frédéric Vercheval

present Duelles

Their artistic collaboration began in 2008 with La Cage, Olivier Masset-Depasse’s first feature film. Since then, Frédéric Vercheval has composed the music for nearly all of his work.

For the 27th edition of the MCM, the two long-time collaborators have chosen to present Duelles. In the early 1960s, in the suburbs of Brussels, Alice and Céline share a close friendship—until a tragedy shatters its fragile balance.

Winner of nine Magritte Awards in 2020, including Best Film, Best Original Score and Best Actress, Duelles stands out as a psychological thriller with unmistakable Hitchcockian undertones and striking precision. Elevated by two outstanding performances, including that of guest of honour Veerle Baetens.
