Gabrielle a grandi dans la petite bourgeoisie agricole où son rêve d’une passion absolue fait scandale. A une époque où l’on destine d’abord les femmes au mariage, elle dérange, on la croit folle. Ses parents la donnent à José, un ouvrier saisonnier, chargé de faire d’elle une femme respectable. Gabrielle dit ne pas l’aimer, se voit enterrée vivante. Lorsqu’on l’envoie en cure thermale pour soigner ses calculs rénaux, son mal de pierres, un lieutenant blessé dans la guerre d’Indochine, André Sauvage, fait renaître en elle cette urgence d’aimer. Ils fuiront ensemble, elle se le jure, et il semble répondre à son désir. Cette fois on ne lui prendra pas ce qu’elle nomme « la chose principale ». Gabrielle veut aller au bout de son rêve.

Gabrielle grew up in the small agricultural bourgeoisie where her dream of absolute passion caused a scandal. At a time when women were primarily destined for marriage, she was disturbing and was thought to be crazy. Her parents gave her to José, a seasonal worker, in charge of making her a respectable woman. Gabrielle says she doesn't love him and sees herself buried alive. When she is sent to a spa to cure her kidney stones, her stone sickness, a lieutenant wounded in the Indochina war, André Sauvage, revives in her this urgency to love. They will run away together, she swears it, and he seems to answer her desire. This time one will not take to him what she names "the principal thing". Gabrielle wants to go to the end of her dream.
