From Marseille to the world: duos on the rise
From the first encounters at the International Market for Film Music Composition to selections at renowned film festivals, the films that have passed through the Festival international Music & Cinema Marseille continue to gain momentum. In 2025, more than thirty short films and seven features emerging from the Market went on to reach cinemas and earn numerous awards and distinctions—a success that underlines the Market’s key role in the landscape of music for image.
Seven Features, Seven Journeys
Winter in Sokcho by Koya Kamura
At Locarno and Busan, Becoming by Zhannat Alshanova (music by Emil Sana) emerged as one of the year’s revelations. Quitte ou double by Rachida Saadi (music by Florent Athenosy) received two awards in Morocco—for Best Screenplay and Best Actress—while Points of View by Pepi Romagnoli (music by Joris Hermy) won Best Documentary in Germany and earned additional nominations in Los Angeles and Hollywood.
Among the European co-productions, Man of the House by Andamion Murataj (music by Laetitia Pansanel-Garric) was presented at the Sarajevo Film Festival, Grand petit frère by Karima Guennouni (music by Hassan Ali) screened at the National Film Festival of Tangier, and Stand By by Daphne Van den Blink (music by Ruben De Gheselle) was selected at both DOCVILLE and the Ji.hlava International Documentary Film Festival.
Short Films Making Noise
Short films supported by the Market have also made their mark. This year, many of them travelled from one continent to another, collecting awards and selections along the way. First among them, Ce qui appartient à César by Violette Gitton, with an original score by Delphine Malausséna (also celebrated for Hiver à Sokcho), won multiple distinctions at MyFrenchFilmFestival, Flickerfest and Jeunesse Tout Court, and was nominated for a César.
The creative bond between director and composer shines in Le Jeune Sofiane by Fabien Ara, set to music by Eliott Delafosse. His vibrant score helped the film win several awards, including at Itinérances and in Valencia. The duo delivers a deeply moving work in which music underlines both anger and injustice.
A similar synergy emerges in Détaché by Olivier Poisson and Julien Lilti, with music by Jean-Christophe Gairard, whose percussive soundtrack amplifies the film’s emotional power, and in Bahamas by Maxime Bultot, also supported by Eliott Delafosse. Its bittersweet soundscape accompanies a tender coming-of-age story that earned prizes at Hollywood ShortsFest, Arctic Film Festival, Mirada Corta Short Film Festival, the Festival du premier court métrage, and Jeunesse Tout Courts.
More metaphorical, The One Who Knows by Eglé Davidavičè (music by Lolita Del Pino) continued its journey across the globe—from Angers to Barcelona, Seattle to Linz—winning over audiences and juries alike with its organic score that breathes with the rhythm of the animation itself.
The One Who Knows by Eglé Davidavičè
In a queer register, Un invincible été by Arnaud Dufeys (once again with music by Lolita Del Pino) toured LGBTQIA+ festivals from Verviers to Miami, via Amsterdam and Vilnius, and was also featured at the Berlinale.
Finally, Shivtown by Hillel Ben-Zeev Perlov, with music by Clément Boulier and Théo Perek, reminds us that documentary filmmaking also has a place at the heart of the Market. Presented at Docaviv, Les Nuits Med and Cinema South, the film weaves a subtle dialogue between reality and composition.
Together, these short films paint the portrait of a new generation placing music at the very center of cinema. And they are far from alone—other films born at the Market, such as Le dernier homme de Vicky Venucci, Naissance d’un feu, Le Bézoard, orChez nous(all part of the MCM's official competition in 2025), continue to make their way through festivals worldwide.
